Hi, I’m Helene, creator of Niio Dance — a movement methodology that weaves somatic intelligence, creative expression, and east-west wisdom into grounded transformation.
As a British-born Chinese woman, I grew up between two cultures — often feeling out of place until I discovered dance. Movement became my way home: to my body, my voice, and my creative truth. Over 20+ years, I’ve studied across the UK, India, Thailand, and Japan, exploring yoga, meditation, somatic therapies, and embodied practices.

Some of the dances in the modules are quite energetic. So depending on the nature of your injury, you may need to move in a much more inward and gentle way, but there is always the possibility to move, even with quite ‘severe’ injuries. However, somatics is about ‘listening into’ your body and what it needs. You probably already know the answer. Or get the course, but know that you will revisit it again for a full bodied dance experience when your injury subsides.
Whilst it is optimal to be able to move freely in a wide expanse of space (which is one of the benefits of moving outdoors!), we can also move in much smaller spaces. Plus we can move and travel in many directions, not just across the floor!
Dress to be comfortable, in unrestricted clothes, and layers in case you get warm. You may need to take care of dancing on a carpet with bare feet, in case of friction, but normally bare feet is best.
The main issue is not your potential ability to move, as dance covers all kinds of movement – subtle, awkward, clumsy, irregular, erratic as well as slick or athletic. Dropping any expectations or judgements around yourself and your abilities is the first step in responding to your question! In doing so and relaxing, you may find that your perceived challenge around movement and dance may gradually dissolve.
As you sense into your body inspired by my cues, you may find new ways of moving that you had not done before. You will expand your movement potential, and experience a more clear and grounded presence that can filter into your interactions in life. You will 100% have a new experience of moving and being in your body.
